What is a Mochi Donut?​

A Chewy, Crispy Treat with a Story as Rich as Its Flavor​

​

Mochi (餅) means rice—specifically, sweet, short-grained glutinous rice used in traditional Japanese cuisine. This chewy, starchy base was brought to Hawaii by Japanese plantation workers, where it later inspired the fusion creation of mochi donuts.

The earliest known mochi donut recipe came in 1992 from Charmaine Ocasek of Uncle Lani’s Poi Mochi, blending mochi with poi (fermented taro). The iconic Pon de Ring shape—a circle of dough balls—was developed even earlier in 1956 by Mister Donut founder Henry Winouker, based on Brazil’s pao de queijo.

In 2016, the founders of Liliha Bakery visited a Mister Donut in Japan and helped popularize this modern twist, bringing it back to the U.S. and inspiring the mochi donut wave we’re proud to be part of today.

Munchi Mochi was born on the road, inspired by travels across the U.S. and heartwarming reunions with friends and family. Along the way, we noticed a growing trend—mochi donut shops thriving in tech-forward cities. These weren’t just snack spots; they were community hubs, filled with creativity, good vibes, and unforgettable flavors.

When we searched for the perfect place to share that energy, Cedar Rapids stood out. A growing hub of young, tech-savvy minds, the area was ready for something fresh. And since anime, gaming, and tech culture go hand in hand, we created Munchi Mochi—a space that brings them all together.
